The goal of this project is to reduce the key threat that fisheries pose to manta and mobula rays. The project’s specific objectives are to ensure that:
1) relevant and comprehensive policies are in place to regulate trade and fishing of mobulid rays
2) governments and local communities can support and embrace protective measures
3) the Manta Trust charity has a five-year plan and funding strategy for its work on global mobulid conservation.
The first two activities will be carried out in three target countries – Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Peru – as they show a political readiness for engagement and a viability for conservation advancement. They also host some of the world’s largest mobulid fisheries.
