The Namibian Islands Marine Protected Area (NIMPA) is Africa’s second largest marine reserve, but the sharks, skates and rays living there are completely unstudied. This project will use an array of techniques including underwater video, acoustic tags, and collaboration with recreational anglers to better understand the species presence, as well as the threats they face. Tools to communicate the importance of elasmobranchs for healthy oceans to audiences in Namibia and beyond will also be developed. These data will be used to develop shark and ray management measures for the NIMPA.
