Enhancing Elasmobranch Conservation through the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS)

Grantee The Ocean Foundation
Location Global
Grant Amount $114,400
Duration Eight months
Status: Completed

Funds awarded to The Ocean Foundation will allow Shark Advocates International (SAI) and its partners to produce and publicize an expert report that documents Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) Parties’ performance with respect to obligations for the 34 shark and ray species listed on the CMS Appendices. Preliminary findings were used at the CMS Conference of Parties in October to engage relevant countries in urgent efforts to protect Atlantic shortfin Mako sharks, and will inform a November IUCN workshop on endangered sawfishes. The final report, due out in the spring of 2018, is aimed at catalyzing enhanced conservation of the broader group of listed sharks and rays by highlighting key shortfalls, challenges, and solutions.
