AquaLife Conservancy is working with fishing communities along Ghana’s coast to protect one of the world’s most threatened guitarfish. Once caught accidentally, guitarfish are now heavily targeted for their valuable fins and meat, pushing them toward local extinction. Building on years of trust with local communities, this project combines science with community action to safeguard critical habitats and reduce fishing pressure. Fishers will be trained as “fisher biologists” to map nursery and aggregation areas to expand a locally managed marine area and promote safe-release practices and sustainable fishing methods. Through conservation education, school outreach, radio discussions, and alternative livelihoods, AquaLife Conservancy aims to inspire long-term stewardship while improving community resilience.
