The millennia old Maugean Skate could be the world’s first extinction of a shark or ray species due to industrial aquaculture. The skate is restricted to the remote Macquarie Harbour which forms part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area for which the skate is listed as a value for its Gondwanan-lineage. Environment Tasmania will bring the plight of the Maugean skate to regions across Tasmania in a new short film, by award-winning director Josh (Bones) Murphy, that builds support from the business sector and local communities for the necessary conservation actions required to save the skate. The film and panel will feature critical voices and experts, including Tasmanian Aboriginals, leading skate scientists, government representatives, and youth.
