All three angel shark species present in the Mediterranean are classified as Critically Endangered by IUCN due to steep population declines and extinctions at several locations. The Aegean Sea is an angel shark hot spot, but they are threatened by illegal fishing. The project aims at strengthening angel shark conservation in Greece by implementing an array of activities described in the Sub-Regional Action Plan for the Conservation of Angels Sharks in the Aegean Sea and the waters surrounding Crete.
