The Bijagós Archipelago in Guinea-Bissau is incredibly biodiverse and an important breeding and feeding site for sharks and rays, like the critically endangered blackchin guitarfish and the scalloped hammerhead shark. Despite legal protections sharks and rays are captured in high numbers by subsistence fishers and foreign vessels fishing illegally. The Bijagós currently has three MPAs and two MPAs under development. This project will ensure that sharks and rays are at the basis of the new zoning and management plans with no catch/no retention and gill net bans in all five MPAs.
